The history of alchemy starts many centuries ago, when humanity didn’t yet have a clear boundary between spirituality and science. People were hoping to use quasi-scientific methods and magical formulas to transform lead into gold and to find the youth’s elixir. Even though there aren’t any proofs to attest that lead could be transformed into gold through alchemical methods and seeing as though people keep on aging as they always have, alchemy still remains an important stepping stone in the evolution of modern science (it is often regarded as the predecessor or modern medicine, chemistry and metallurgy).

In the same time, alchemy has profound resonances for understanding the human psyche, as Jung has shown in his research regarding psychology and alchemy, on which he passionately worked on for 10 years. Having said all this, according to Von Franz (1982), Jung’s writings on alchemy are oftentimes difficult to understand or are put under the question mark by those who contest Jung and even, sometimes, by his own adepts.
